It ain't dark yet but it's gettin' there

I think of America (this is my county)
And it breaks my heart.
We had so much hope in our youth
Yet our dreams fell apart.

They kept right on killing in our name
And telling us lies about freedom
While they plundered the world
And parceled out fiefdoms.

I know it's an old man's lament,
But they too are hearing the call.
Yes, we'll all go down together,
As the leaves begin to fall.

Today, a young man said to me,
"I think of America and it breaks my heart.
How can we be feeling this hopeful
Yet so threatened from the start?"
